Saint-Estèphe
South-West FranceSaint-Estèphe
Saint-Estèphe is a red wine from the Bordeaux wine region in France. It is produced in the eponymous village of Saint-Estèphe, located in the Gironde department. This wine is considered one of the noblest and most celebrated of Bordeaux, characterized by intense aromas and a solid tannic structure.
The vineyards of Saint-Estèphe are planted on clay-limestone soil, which imparts a unique character and fine acidity to the wines. The principal grape varieties used in production are Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc, which contribute aromas of dark fruits, blackcurrant, and liquorice. The wine is aged in oak barrels to develop complexity and depth.
Saint-Estèphe wines are often regarded as the most robust and tannic of Bordeaux. They possess excellent length on the palate and a solid tannic structure, making them ideal companions for red meats and strong cheeses. They can be cellared for several years, during which they develop increasingly complex aromas and improve with age.
Several prestigious châteaux operate in Saint-Estèphe, including Château Cos d'Estournel, Château Montrose, and Château Calon-Ségur. These estates produce superior quality wines that are highly appreciated by wine enthusiasts.
