Moselle
Alsace & Eastern FranceMoselle wine is produced in the Moselle region, located in eastern France. This region is renowned for its dry, fruity white wines, which are made from Riesling grapes, sometimes blended with varieties such as Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, and Elbling.
The Moselle region is characterized by a continental climate, with cold winters and warm summers. Vines are cultivated on steep hillsides and terraced slopes, which ensure good air circulation and optimal sun exposure. The soils are primarily composed of slate and sandstone, which give Moselle wines their mineral character and vibrant acidity.
Moselle wines are often compared to those from Germany's Rheingau region, as they share similar characteristics. Riesling is the region's signature variety and is considered one of the world's finest white grape varieties. Moselle Riesling wines are typically dry, with aromas of exotic fruits, apple, and pear, and a lively acidity that makes them perfect accompaniments to fish and seafood.
Moselle Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris wines are also highly appreciated for their fruity character and acidity. They are often served with vegetable and cheese-based dishes. Finally, Elbling is an ancient variety that is increasingly used in Moselle wine production. It yields light, aromatic wines that are often served as an aperitif.
