Peel and cut the onions in half, then slice them thinly.
Heat a little oil and butter in a pan, then add the onions. They should turn a nice golden brown. Season with salt and pepper.
Peel, remove the germ from, and press the garlic.
Wash the tomatoes and cut them into thin 5 mm slices.
Heat a little butter in a pan, then quickly sear the beef, 1 minute on each side. Season with salt on one side only.
Remove the meat from the pan and deglaze with the lime juice, water, Oxo, and pressed garlic. Let it cook for a few moments then turn off the heat.
Cut the rolls in half or cut the baguette into 5 cm portions and split them.
Lightly brush the bottom of the sandwich with the Oxo and garlic mixture (be careful not to oversoak).
Layer 2 pieces of beef, some caramelized onions, and 2 tomato slices on top.
Spread mayonnaise or your sauce of choice on the top of the sandwich.
Close the sandwich and enjoy.
This is a classic pregos recipe. Personally, I don't use butter in my version, just good quality olive oil.
