Entre Deux Mers
South-West FranceEntre Deux Mers is a wine region in southwestern France, situated between the Dordogne and Garonne rivers. The area is renowned for its dry, light white wines as well as for its fruity and elegant red wines.
The vineyards of Entre Deux Mers are cultivated on clay-limestone soils, which provide the grapes with good acidity and fine structure. The most commonly used varieties are Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon, and Muscadelle for the white wines, and Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon for the red wines.
The wines of Entre Deux Mers are often compared to Bordeaux Supérieur, yet they possess their own distinctive character that marks them as superior quality wines. They tend to be lighter and more fruit-forward, with aromas of red fruits and blackcurrant. The red wines are typically more elegant and less tannic than those of Bordeaux Supérieur.
Entre Deux Mers is also known for its sweet wines, notably Sauternes, produced from botrytized grapes. These wines are often characterized by aromas of honey, candied fruits, and vanilla.
The Entre Deux Mers region is equally rich in history and culture. The wine châteaux stand as testament to the area's heritage, and numerous museums and monuments await exploration. Cellar visits and wine tastings are also highly popular activities in the region.
