Gigondas
Rhône ValleyGigondas
Gigondas is a red wine produced in the Rhône region of France, crafted from grape varieties including Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre. The vineyard sits on the hillsides of the Dentelles de Montmirail massif in the southern Rhône valley. The soil comprises stones and rolled pebbles, with a substantial presence of limestone and schist.
Gigondas is renowned for its complex and rich character, offering aromas of red and dark fruits, liquorice, pepper, and garrigue. It is widely regarded as among the finest red wines of the Rhône region and frequently compared to the celebrated wines of Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
Production of Gigondas remains limited, with approximately 800 hectares of cultivated vineyard. The winemakers of Gigondas take considerable pride in their wine and work diligently to maintain its quality and reputation. They employ traditional viticulture methods, notably gobelet pruning, to obtain the finest possible fruit.
Gigondas is typically aged in oak casks for around 18 months, which imparts greater textural and flavor complexity. Older vintages can be cellared for several years, developing additional depth and interest.
Gigondas pairs well with spiced dishes, particularly the region's traditional daubes and stews. It is also an excellent accompaniment to aged cheeses and cured meats. The wine is best served at 16 to 18 degrees Celsius.
