Blanc fumé de Pouilly
Loire ValleyPouilly-Fumé Blanc Fumé
Blanc Fumé de Pouilly is a dry white wine produced in the Pouilly-Fumé wine region, located in the Nièvre department of France. Made exclusively from Sauvignon Blanc, it is recognized for its aromatic complexity and mineral character.
The term "fumé" refers to the limestone bedrock and flint present in the region's soils, which impart smoky and mineral aromas to the wine. The cool, windy climate of Pouilly-Fumé also favors the production of high-quality wines by promoting slow, balanced ripening of the grapes.
Production of Blanc Fumé de Pouilly is governed by the Pouilly-Fumé Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC), which guarantees the quality and authenticity of the wine. Vineyards must be cultivated on flint soils, and grape yields per hectare are restricted to ensure wine quality.
Blanc Fumé de Pouilly is characterized by aromas of stone fruits, apple and pear, along with notes of lemon, grapefruit and mint. The wine also displays aromas of smoke, mineral and hazelnut, contributing to its considerable aromatic complexity. It is well-balanced and fresh, with pronounced acidity and a fine lingering finish.
Blanc Fumé de Pouilly pairs beautifully with fish and shellfish, stone fruit-based dishes, and soft-paste cheeses. It also makes an excellent aperitif wine, thanks to its crisp, lively character. It is generally served at 8 to 10 degrees Celsius to fully appreciate its aromatic profile.
