Muscadet
Loire ValleyMuscadet is a dry white wine produced in the Loire-Atlantique wine region of France. It is made from Melon de Bourgogne grapes, a unique variety that can only be cultivated in this region.
The Muscadet region is renowned for its granitic soils and humid climate, which impart the wine with its distinctive character. The vines are cultivated on sloped terrain, which promotes good air circulation and optimal drainage.
Muscadet is characterized by its freshness and minerality. It possesses a fine acidity that creates a sense of lightness on the palate. The wine also displays aromas of stone fruits, such as apples and pears, along with notes of white flowers and hazelnuts.
It is typically served alongside seafood, such as oysters and mussels, as it pairs exceptionally well with the briny flavors of these dishes. It is equally well-suited to accompany fish courses and soft-paste cheeses.
Several styles of Muscadet exist, including Muscadet Sèvre et Maine, Muscadet Coteaux de la Loire, and Muscadet Coteaux de la Loire Sur Lie. Muscadet Sur Lie is the most well-known and appreciated among wine enthusiasts, as it is aged on lees, the sediment of dead yeast cells, which imparts additional aromatic complexity.
