Coteaux du Layon

Loire Valley
Share
Coteaux du Layon wines are sweet white wines produced in the Loire-Atlantique wine region of France. They are made from Chenin Blanc, also known as Pineau de la Loire. The vineyards are cultivated on steep hillsides along the Layon river, from which the appellation takes its name. Coteaux du Layon wines are characterized by their sweetness balanced with acidity. They display aromas of fresh fruits such as peach, pear and mirabelle plum, along with notes of honey and botrytis, the noble fungus that lends these wines complex aromatics and a creamy texture. Coteaux du Layon wines are classified into three categories according to their residual sugar content: dry wines, medium-sweet wines and sweet wines. Dry wines contain less than 4 g/l of sugar, medium-sweet wines contain between 4 and 12 g/l and sweet wines contain more than 12 g/l. Coteaux du Layon wines are often served alongside cheese, dried fruits or desserts. They may also be enjoyed as an aperitif or as a dessert wine. The sweeter expressions can be cellared for many years, gaining in complexity and aromatic depth over time.
